noise music

Yesterday I had dinner with Nuno Nunes, and in conversation we ended talking about Noise (the music genre). At the end, he asked me to tell him about some noise acts so he can explore more Noise. Instead of telling him about some artists, I decided instead to make this post, so others can also know about my actual recommendations in the noise music scene.
I guess I should do post simmilar to this one for a lot of other musical genres... Well, maybe in the future :-)

  3. Solo Mike Patton's pure noise, but do his band projects stand as such?

How about noise/metal? From Boris to Converge, aren't they allowed in?

  4. Well, I wouldn't say that Mike Patton is pure noise: in fact his music has a lot of experimental avant-garde elements, and could also generally be considered as alternative rock. Lot's of his other projects are noise, even more than his "solo work", even if I don't see any noise at all in his most well-known project "Faith no More".

Regarding to Sun O))) or Boris or Converge, I wouldn't consider them "noise metal" (heck, I even don't think that such a style exists), but drone (the first two) or metalcore (regarding to Converge). And yes, I usually prefer other styles like Drone or Dark Ambient rather than Noise (and lots of times they overlap), but this was intended to focus more on noise itself... Maybe two other posts, one about dark ambient and other about drone, will appear... just don't hold your breathe :-P

  7. I would add, off the top of my head, at least Acid Mother's Temple. And I think you should descriminate which periods of Coil can be considered Noise, because a lot of their albums isn't at all. What about Lightning Bolt?

  8. Acid Mothers Temple and Lightning Bolt are two great noise rock (the first one on the psychadelic side) bands, but I was somewhat trying to refer good noise acts and then only a little about noise rock (with Big Black) just to show that facet of noise... Or, well, I don't know, it's allways hard to chose a few bands, and these were my choices ;-)

Regarding to Coil, yes, they worked with several music styles, but I guess that those interested will easilly find about it :-)

    ahh nice list.
Alec Empire vs Merzbow is the best album within this genre.

    but...

u missed Haus Arafna, Sonic Youth and Nic Endo.
You can't do such a list and leave these behind!

    a more broader list:

  10. I don't really know Boris' career that much, but what with their genre bouncing and their live collaborations with Merzbow I assumed they had had a noise period.
You are right - they do often overlap, still I'd say they're pretty easy to distinguish.

  11. Well, Boris colabs with Merzbow surely can be considered Noise, but as far as their albums are concerned, the only one which sometimes (AFAIK) is considered noise is "Vein" (which I never listened to).
